Silent Night Lyrics

Celtic Woman
Music Video

Silent night, Holy night
All is calm, all is bright
'Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, Holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight!
Glories stream from heaven afar;
Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!
Christ the Saviour is born!
Christ the Saviour is born!

Christ the Saviour is born!

Silent night, Holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy Holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth

🎶 Composer: Franz Xaver Gruber (1818) - Austrian primary school teacher, church organist and composer.

✍️ Lyrics: Joseph Mohr (1816) - Austrian Roman Catholic priest and writer.

📝 Song Brief:
The song was first performed on Christmas Eve in 1818 at St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria.

Joseph Mohr brought the poem to Gruber only hours before the service, and tradition holds that the church organ was broken, prompting the carol’s first performance with guitar accompaniment.
